About us
The Optical Art Film- & Special Effects GmbH was founded in 1987 by Harald Lehmann and Christian Burgdorff as an „Optical House“ for advertising and feature film post production. The first installed machines included an optical printer and a rostrum camera setup. Following the success of the digitized optical setups, a portable motion control camera joined the machine park allowing for dedicated special effect camera work. These machines serviced mainly the advertisement business, but also allowed filmmakers to add special effects scenes to their movies. The 1990s saw the first move towards the digital post production and Optical Art invested in Silicon Graphics workstations with the first professional image processing tool. Also the a Cine III film recorder was later purchased that allowed the first steps in what would become the Digital Intermediate workflow. Since the beginning of the new millenia not only scene based DI work was possible, but the scanning of a complete feature films, the digital color correction and the final film recording was in reach. After gaining the expierence in this field an inherent urge for a proper DI System led Optical Art to invested in a complete new setup. The first ever „Baselight“ grading system was acquired, accompanied by an ARRI-Laser film recorder and an ARRI-Scanner. This setup is even today the defacto standard for DI work and is still used in most film based movie productions.
With the extension of the business 2008 towards editorial services Optical Art can now offer the full range of image post productions services for TV and feature film productions. This year also marks the first DCI compliant digital cinema deliveries.
